The dream world of flinging paint
The beauty of flinging paint is the unpredictability of what you throw. Every throw comes on the canvas and then the paint goes its own way. If you want to throw a horse you have a problem because the only thing you will probably throw is the horse’s droppings. However, every throw you do contributes to the process of ultimately arriving at a beautiful end result.
In recent years I have had countless people in my studio who have created the most beautiful things without a preconceived plan. With a flinging paint workshop, they made the most beautiful things. In doing so, they went all the way back to the basics of Jackson Pollock’s abstract expressionism, where the result is subordinate to the action. The action that is directed from the subconscious. And what a lot of people don’t know is that Pollock was influenced by Surrealism, which generated images from the subconscious. A dream world. Just think of the dreamworlds that Salvador Dali made with slack clocks, heads (or what looked like heads) on sticks, etc. This gives you a bit of an idea of what was going on in Salvador Dali’s head. The difference with Pollock, however, was that the surrealists’ work was put on the canvas in a controlled manner, while Pollock’s was not. And that has been the motivation for me to delve more into abstract expressionism and in particular flinging paint. If you fling paint, as said in the introduction, you never know what it will turn out to be. When you look at the painting later, you will be surprised by the many recognizable shapes that, if you pick them out, form a separate painting in the painting.
As an artist I have been looking for a connection between the digital world and the analog world for years. This has resulted, among other things, in the Art with Balls project. In which I made pixel art from used tennis balls. The NFT market gives me the opportunity to explore that further.
So I made a number of paintings, only using the flinging technique, and made cut-outs from them, each showing their own dream world. In some you can see faces like in Dali’s paintings, in another one you see other things. I will leave it all to your own imagination. All paintings have one thing in common, they are dream worlds. Dream worlds in which surrealism meets abstract expressionism and allows the viewer to discover something new every time. At least, that’s my hope as an artist.

De droomwereld van verfsmijten
Het mooie van gooien met verf is de onvoorspelbaarheid van wat je gooit. Iedere worp komt op het doek en dan gaat de verf zijn eigen gang. Als je een paard wilt gooien heb je een probleem want het enige wat je waarschijnlijk zult gooien zijn de uitwerpselen van het paard. Echter, iedere worp die je doet draagt bij aan het proces om uiteindelijk te komen tot een schitterend eindresultaat.
Ik heb de afgelopen jaren talloze mensen bij mij in het atelier gehad die de mooiste dingen hebben gecreëerd zonder vooropgezet plan. Met een workshop verfsmijten maakten ze de mooiste dingen die ze vooraf nooit hadden kunnen bedenken. Daarbij gingen ze helemaal terug naar de basis van het abstract expressionisme van Jackson Pollock waarbij het resultaat ondergeschikt is aan de actie. De actie die gestuurd wordt vanuit het onderbewuste. En wat heel veel mensen niet weten is dat Pollock beïnvloed is door het Surrealisme, wat beelden genereerde vanuit het onderbewustzijn. Een droomwereld. Denk maar eens aan de droomwerelden die Salvador Dali maakte met daarin slappe klokken, hoofden (of wat daarop leek) op stokken etc. Je krijgt daardoor een beetje het idee wat er allemaal omging in het hoofd van Salvador Dali. Het verschil met Pollock was echter dat het werk van de surrealisten gecontroleerd op het doek is gezet en dat van Pollock niet. En dat is voor mij de motivatie geweest om mij meer te gaan verdiepen in het abstract expressionisme en dan met name het gooien van verf. Als je met verf gooit weet je, zoals gezegd in de inleiding, nooit waar het op uitdraait. Als je later naar je schilderij kijkt word je verrast door de vele herkenbare vormen die, als je ze eruit pikt, een apart schilderij in het schilderij vormen.
Ik ben als kunstenaar al jaren bezig met het zoeken naar een verbinding tussen de digitale wereld en de analoge wereld. Dat heeft onder andere geresulteerd in het project Kunst met ballen. Waarin ik pixelart heb gemaakt van gebruikte tennisballen. De NFT-markt geeft mij de gelegenheid om dat nog meer te gaan onderzoeken.
Ik heb dus een aantal schilderijen gemaakt, alleen maar gesmeten, en daaruit uitsneden gemaakt die allemaal een eigen droomwereld uitbeelden. In sommige kun je gezichten zien zoals in de schilderijen van Dali, in een ander werk zie je weer andere dingen. Alle schilderijen hebben 1 ding gemeen, het zijn droomwerelden. Droomwerelden waarin het surrealisme het abstract expressionisme ontmoet en de kijker iedere keer weer iets nieuws laat ontdekken. Althans, dat is de hoop van mij als kunstenaar.
